Commercial driver licenses, commercial learner permits extended through August 2021

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced new pandemic-related waivers. They’re allowing some commercial drivers to operate with expired licenses and medical certificates.

Waivers apply to commercial driver licenses (CDLs) and commercial learner permits (CLPs) with expiration dates on or after March 1, 2020. They also apply to medical certificates expiring on or after March 1, 2021. Unless renewed already, these documents are now extended through August 31, 2021.

The extension affects almost all CDL types and endorsements. CDLs with a hazardous materials (hazmat) endorsement aren’t included.

The waivers could end earlier if the pandemic ends or FMCSA decides they are no longer needed.

We won’t assess late fees during the extension period. You will not receive a new license with a new expiration date.

We have temporary rules in place making almost everyone eligible for online renewals. Act now to renew your license or permit. There is nothing to gain by waiting.

If you do not have a valid medical certificate on file with us, please get and submit one as soon as possible. You have several options that do not need a visit to a driver licensing office:
